Sister of Mercy Mary Ellen Curl dies at age 75

Sister of Mercy Mary Ellen Curl, 75, died Aug. 25 at the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Nashville, Tenn.

Sister Curl, a native of Louisville, graduated from Mercy Academy in 1959 and entered the Sisters of Mercy later that year.

She served in parish ministry and education throughout the Archdiocese of Louisville, beginning at the former St. Basil’s School and Immaculate Conception School in La Grange, Ky. She also directed and taught at the Mercy Kindergarten from 1967-1974.

Sister Curl began serving as a director of religious education (DRE) at St. Athanasius Church in 1974, and later served as a DRE at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Campbellsville, Ky., and Holy Redeemer Church in Greensburg, Ky. She also served at St. James Church in Elizabethtown, Ky., and at St. Christopher Church in Radcliff, Ky.

In 1995, she was appointed as the first female pastoral administrator in the Archdiocese of Louisville. She served at the parishes of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Francis in Loretto, Ky., and Holy Cross in Holy Cross, Ky.

Upon leaving parish ministry in 2004, Sister Curl began serving at Sacred Heart Home in Louisville, primarily as a chaplain. She was also a spiritual director and conducted directed retreats both in Louisville and Nashville, Tenn.

Sister Curl is survived by a brother, Joseph LeRoy “Roy”; sisters, Anita Lvons; Rita Reis; Sue Schulte; and Kaye Heim. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 29 at St. Frances of Rome Church. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
