Sister Margaret Spalding Wathen dies

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Margaret Spalding Wathen died at Nazareth Home on Sept. 6. She was 82 and had been a Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 61 years.

Sister Wathen, a native of Owensboro, Ky., served in elementary education as a teacher and principal in Kentucky and Ohio. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, Sister Wathen served at St. Matthias and at Holy Family schools.

She also served as the director of Nazareth Campus Service, as the choir director at St. Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro, in health ministry at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn., and as a volunteer in the Western Province Office and family ministry.

She is survived by her four brothers, Robert Louis Wathen of Orlando, Fla., John Hamilton Wathen Sr. of Louisville, Samuel Thomas and William Patrick Wathen of Hardin, Ky.; a sister, Margaret Bauer of Norman, Okla.; and her religious community.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 10 in St. Vincent Church, followed by burial in Nazareth Cemetery. The celebrant will be Father J. Patrick Reynolds, pastor of St. Thomas More Church in Paducah, Ky.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. in St. Vincent on Sept. 9.  A prayer service will be conducted that evening at 6:30 p.m.
