Sister of Charity of Nazareth Elizabeth (Betty) Shelton, formerly Sister Marie Ellen, died at Nazareth Home on Dec. 23. She was 87 and had been a Sister of Charity of Nazareth (SCN) for 69 years.
Sister Shelton, a native of Paducah, Ky., served as an elementary school teacher and principal for 24 years in Kentucky and Tennessee. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she served at St. Cecilia School from 1948 to 1952; at St. Thomas More School, first as a teacher from 1961 to 1968 and later as principal from 1969 to 1972; and at St. Martha School, where she served as principal from 1968 to 1969.
Sister Shelton also served as a director of religious education at St. Thomas-St. Vincent Home from 1972 to 1976. And she served as director of pastoral care at Nazareth Home from 1978 to 1980. She has also served at Nazareth Home Health, Flaget Hospital in Bardstown, Ky., and St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Ky.
She has served in the apostolate of prayer at Nazareth Home since 2010.
Sister Shelton is survived by her brother George Shelton II of Wilmette, Ill., nieces and her religious community.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Dec. 30 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Vincent Church on the SCN campus in Nazareth, Ky. Burial will follow in Nazareth Cemetery.
Visitation continues today, Dec. 29, at 4 p.m. at St. Vincent. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m.
