Sister Anthony Wargel dies at 100

SrAnthonyWargelUrsuline Sister of Louisville Anthony Wargel died Jan. 24 at Mercy Sacred Heart. She was 100 and had been an Ursuline Sister since 1932.
Sister Wargel, a native of  Evansville, Ind., taught grade school from 1934 to 1969 in Archdiocese of Louisville schools, including Holy Trinity, St. Elizabeth, St. George, St. Leo, St. Martin of Tours, St. Raphael, St. Vincent de Paul, Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Mother of Sorrows. She also taught in Indiana, Maryland, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and West Virginia.
Sister Wargel served as a reading specialist at the Louisville Independent School from 1969 to 1981. She remained active as a tutor until the age of 91. From 2005 to 2014, Sister Wargel led the rosary with parents Sacred Heart Model School students and with people who are homebound and in nursing homes.
She is survived by her nieces, nephews and her Ursuline community.
Visitation will be Jan. 29 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 3115 Lexington Road., followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery.
