Sister Anna Marie Canary, teacher and principal, dies

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Anna Marie Canary, formerly Sister Christopher Canary, 77, died March 16 at Nazareth Home. She had been an SCN for 59 years.

Sister Canary, a native of Roanoke, Va., served in Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio and Virginia in elementary education as a teacher and principal.

In Louisville, Sister Canary taught at St. Cecilia School from 1959 to 1967. She also served as a member of the Renewal Team of the SCNs, director of annual giving for the SCNs and as director of the SCN Mission Office, now called Office of Congregational Advancement.

Sister Canary also served as the pastoral administrator at St. Vincent Church on the SCN campus in Nazareth, Ky., from 2000 to 2003. She served in the Apostolate of Prayer at Nazareth Home since 2011.

Sister Canary is survived by her sister Helen Rowe of Roanoke, Va., nieces and nephews and her religious community.

A prayer service will be held on March 23 at 6:30 p.m. in St. Vincent Church. A memorial mass will be celebrated on March 24 at 10:50 a.m., also at St. Vincent.

Sister Canary donated her body for medical research. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
