Scout creates outdoor Stations of the Cross for St. Helen in Glasgow

GLASGOW, Ky. — David Sullivan of Boy Scout Troop 1808 here decided his Eagle Scout service project would be one with a spiritual benefit.

David designed and erected an outdoor Stations of the Cross trail behind the St. Helen Church Parish Center in Glasgow.

According to his father and Scoutmaster, Bruce Sullivan, the catechetical program at St. Helen Church has a tradition of having students begin their Wednesday evening catechism classes with the Stations of the Cross during Lent. He said his son noted that the experience was hampered somewhat by the “lack of an adequate venue.”

Prior to the construction of the outdoor Stations of the Cross trail, the students went into a central meeting hall and moved around the room praying before pictures taped onto the walls. Now with the completion of the project, the catechism students “have a richer experience,” the Scoutmaster wrote in a news release to The Record.

“In addition, it’s not uncommon to see parents making their way through the Stations while their children are in class,” Bruce Sullivan wrote.

More than a dozen people contributed labor to David Sullivan’s project, his father noted, and many St. Helen parishioners helped to finance it.

Troop 1808 is named in honor of the Fathers of Mercy, Bruce Sullivan said, an order of priests established in France in 1808. They have served as pastors at St. Helen Church for more than half a century.

David Sullivan is Troop 1808’s first Eagle Scout, and he has served his parish as an altar server at Sunday and weekday Masses, and at special liturgical functions, such as the Easter Triduum and the Forty Hours Devotion. David is the son of Bruce and Gloria Sullivan and has a brother and three sisters, all home-schooled on their great-great-grandfather’s farm in Summer Shade, Ky.
