Priests, deacons receive new assignments

Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz has made the following appointments, effective June 17 unless otherwise noted.

Among the appointments are several priests who are taking on new roles as pastors or administrators. They are:

Father William Burks
Father William P. Burks

Rev. William P. Burks will become pastor of St. Barnabas Church, while continuing as pastor of St. Pius X Church.
Father Burks was born in Louisville and studied at Saint Meinrad Seminary in St. Meinrad, Ind. He was ordained on May 24, 1986, and has previously served at St. Rita Church, St. Margaret Mary Church, the former St. Polycarp Church and Incarnation Church.

Deacon Cockson
Father David A. Cockson

Rev. David A. Cockson will serve as administrator of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Campbellsville, Ky.; Our Lady of the Hills Church in Finley, Ky.; and Our Lady of Fatima Church in Phillipsburg, Ky.
Father Cockson was born in Grand Island, Neb., and studied at Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wis. He was ordained on May 31, 2014. He was previously assigned to the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown, Ky., and St. Michael Church in Fairfield, Ky.

Deacon Steven Douglas Henriksen
Father Steven D. Henriksen

Rev. Steven D. Henriksen will serve as pastor of the Church of the Ascension. He previously served as administrator of Ascension.
Father Henriksen was born in Clarinda, Iowa, and studied at Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wis. He was ordained on Feb. 2, 2013. He has served as administrator of Ascension since June 2014 and previously served at Holy Trinity Church.

Deacon Christopher Lubecke
Father Christopher B. Lubecke

Rev. Christopher B. Lubecke will be administrator of St. Catherine Church in New Haven, Ky.; and Immaculate Conception Church in Culvertown, Ky.
Father Lubecke was born in Milwaukee, Wis., and studied at St. Mary’s Seminary & University in Baltimore, Md. He was ordained on May 25, 2013, and previously served at St. Albert the Great and Holy Trinity churches.

 

Father Troy D. Overton
Father Troy D. Overton

Rev. Troy D. Overton will serve as pastor of St. Edward Church.
Father Overton was born in Jeffersonville, Ind., and studied at Washington Theological Union in Silver Springs, Md. He was ordained on Sept. 1, 1989. He has previously served at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown, St. Catherine in New Haven and Immaculate Conception in Culvertown.

Additional appointments include:
Rev. Nicholas J. Brown will be associate pastor of Holy Trinity Church. He was previously assigned to St. James Church in Elizabethtown, Ky.; St. Ambrose Church in Cecilia, Ky.; and St. Ignatius Church in White Mills, Ky.

Deacon Peter Bucalo will be associate pastor of Holy Spirit Church, with faculties granted upon his priesthood ordination on May 30.

Deacon Shayne R. Duvall will be associate pastor of St. James Church in Elizabethtown, St. Ambrose Church in Cecilia and St. Ignatius Church in White Mills, with faculties granted upon his priesthood ordination on May 30.

Rev. Joseph T. Graffis will retire from St. Edward Church.

Deacon James Jason Harris will be associate pastor of the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown and St. Michael Church in Fairfield, with faculties granted upon his priesthood ordination on May 30.

Rev. Devassya Kanattu, C.M.I., will serve as associate pastor at St. Bernadette Church. He will travel from India to begin his new assignment.

Rev. James M. Reinhart is retiring from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Campbellsville; Our Lady of the Hills Church in Finley; and Our Lady of Fatima Church in Phillipsburg.

Rev. Saju Vadakumpadan, C.M.I., will serve as associate pastor at St. Gabriel Church. He will travel from the Bahamas to begin his assignment.

Rev. Benedict J. Brown’s assignment as sacramental moderator of Holy Rosary Church in Springfield, Ky., is ending.

Rev. Paul A. Scaglione will be sacramental moderator at St. Boniface Church. He was previously assigned to St. Barnabas.

Rev. Harry J. Gelthaus’ assignment at Holy Family Church is ending. He will remain pastor of St. Stephen Martyr Church.

The sacramental care of Holy Family will now be entrusted to the Conventual Franciscan Community from the St. Maximilian Kolbe Province of Kerala, India. Rev. John Pozhathuparambil, O.F.M. Conv. and Rev. Tony Vattaparambil, O.F.M. Conv. will represent the community as sacramental moderators in a joint effort for ministry at Holy Family.

Deacon J. Patrick Wright will become pastoral administrator of Holy Family, while remaining as director of the Diaconate Office. He was previously assigned to St. Stephen Martyr and Holy Family as a permanent deacon.

Deacon Ernest A. Cooper will remain at Holy Rosary in Springfield as permanent deacon, while his assignment as pastoral administrator is ending.
