Priest appointments announced

Rev. Justin Nelson Alphonse, C.P., has been named pastor of St. Agnes Church by the Very Reverend Joseph Moons, C.P., Provincial Superior of the Passionists. The official appointment is effective Jan. 1.

Father Nelson was born on June 10, 1973; professed religious vows on May 28, 1995; and was ordained to the priesthood on May 7, 2000.

Following his ordination, he was the associate pastor and later pastor of Our Lady of Velankany in Randham, Tamil Nadu, India. He was the director of Prison Ministry in Bangalore, Karnataka, India.

Since coming to the United States, he served as associate pastor of St. Agnes Church in 2009-2010. In 2010 he was appointed the pastor of St. Mary’s, Fairfield, Alabama. In 2015 Father Nelson became the pastor of Holy Family, Ensley, Ala., and St. Mary’s. Both of these are Passionist parishes.

Father Nelson replaces Rev. David Colhour, C.P.

“We thank Father Colhour for his service and dedication to the faithful community of St. Agnes Church, the Passionist Community, and the Archdiocese of Louisville,” said an announcement about the appointment from the archdiocese.

In other official appointments, also effective Jan. 1, are priests who will be named pastor of the parishes where they currently serve in the administrator role: Rev. Adam B. Carrico, Church of the Ascension; Rev. David J. Farrell, St. Dominic Church, Springfield, Ky.; Rev. Kien Nguyen, St. Gregory Church, Samuels, Ky.; and Rev. Deogratias Ssamba, A.J., Good Shepherd Church.
