More than 160 families in West Louisville will have a full Thanksgiving table Nov. 27 thanks to the efforts of parishioners at St. Augustine Church, 1310 West Broadway. On Monday, a line of people stretched from the doors of the parish’s Augustine Hall to the curb of West Broadway. They waited for more than an hour for boxes of traditional Thanksgiving fare. They received poultry, corn bread mix, boxed stuffing, canned vegetables and fresh fruit. Members of St. Augustine’s social concerns committee spearheaded the event which more than a dozen volunteers organized and worked. They were assisted by Holy Trinity Church’s St. Vincent de Paul Conference. The two parishes have worked together for more than five years to feed hungry people living near St. Augustine. Each year Holy Trinity donates food and money for the Thanksgiving giveaway. This year, members of the St. Vincent de Paul conference delivered the food and used the donations to buy fresh items — such as fruit and poultry — at a discount from Creation Gardens and Kroger, said Pat Crowe, a member of the conference. The parish also regularly donates food to the St. Augustine food pantry. St. Augustine has a Dare to Care Food Bank that distributes food two to three times a month. In addition, St. Augustine gives away sandwiches Monday through Thursday to homeless people who come to the door seeking help. The sandwiches are made each week by groups of volunteers from both parishes. On average, the parish serves about 40 sandwiches each week.
