Among those people affected by the earthquake in Nepal, are refugees who expected to begin a new life in Louisville this week.
Catholic Charities reported April 29 that 10 refugees — a family of six, a family of three and an elderly refugee — were slated to arrive here this week, but because of the earthquake, their emigration has been delayed indefinitely.
“It’s sad, everything had been done for them and now that’s delayed,” said Chris Clements, community resource developer for Catholic Charities. “They’ll come, but it may be May or June. They have been in these refugee camps for 17, 20 years. This set back is pretty dramatic.”
Clements noted that the Nepali community in Louisville has had a difficult time in recent months.
“We had those three teenage (Nepali) kids who died” in a car collision with a train last month, he noted. “It hurts to see a community have so much suffering.”
Catholic Charities also expected to receive another Nepali family of three next week, but Clements said that family will likely be delayed, too.
