Lourdes’ cafeteria program provides for the hungry

Students at Our Lady of Lourdes School, 510 Breckenridge Lane, have partnered with the St. Matthews Area Ministries (St. MAM) food pantry to provide for those who are in need.

The cafeteria program — called “We can do small things with GREAT love” — began last December. Since that time, students have donated more than 1,000 leftover food items from the students’ lunches — including nearly 800 wrapped granola bars and candy and 250 pieces of fruit.

A red bucket sits in a prominent location in the cafeteria, and students may place any unused packaged or fresh fruit item in it. The food donations are distributed to the St. MAM food pantry twice a week.

Ann Pifer, associate director of religious education at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, said the cafeteria program “goes along perfectly with our church’s Lenten focus about reducing our footprint in the world.”

Each time students make a donation, they receive a sticker, one that Pifer said she hopes will “serve as a reminder for other students to make good choices with their leftovers, as well.”
