Kwanzaa celebration to be Dec. 30 at CEC

The 33rd annual Citywide Kwanzaa Celebration, hosted by the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry, will be held at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 30 at the Catholic Enrichment Center, 3146 W. Broadway.

The community-wide family event will be filled with music, prayer, African drumming, food and a celebration of history. Cash donations will be accepted for school supplies in preparation for the 2015 school supply drive.

Kwanzaa, which means “first fruits of the harvest” in the African language of Kiswahili, is a seven-day harvest festival celebrated Dec. 26 to Jan. 1. According to a news release from OMM it is not a religious holiday, but a celebration of family, community and culture.

Kwanzaa was founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor of African Studies at California State University-Long Beach. At the heart of the celebration are the “Nguzo Saba,” The Seven Principles — one for each day of the observance. For additional information, call OMM at 636-0296 or call the Catholic Enrichment Center at 776-0262.
