Interfaith program will explore fasting in three Abrahamic religions

An interfaith program on “The Sacred Rite of Fasting in Judaism, Christianity and Islam,” will be presented at the Cathedral of the Assumption’s undercroft, 433 South Fifth St., on March 18 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Religious scholars from the Jewish, Islamic and Christian traditions will share their perspectives on fasting.

Among the presenters are: Rabbi David Ariel-Joel; David A. Lipp, cantor, Congregation Adath Jeshurun; Benedictine Sister Jeana Visel; Dr. Philip Brisson, director of music, Cathedral of the Assumption; Dr. Riffat Hassan, professor emerita, University of Louisville; and Imam Azam Efindira and his Zikr group.

The event, which will include music and chanting from the three traditions, is free and open to the public.
