Tom and Terry Ubben, members of St. Edward Church, left a flag on the grave of Bud Ubben, a veteran of U.S. Marine Corps, at Calvary Cemetery on Memorial Day. He signed up at age 17 near the end of World War II and got out just before the Korean War, Tom Ubben said.

“He was the best father I could ask for,” he said. “We had a wonderful childhood.”

The Ubben family attended St. Denis Church when Tom was a child with his three siblings. Their father was a “stern disciplinarian, but consistent and fair, something the Marine Corps taught him,” Ubben said. Bud Ubben died in 2002.

Catholic Cemeteries provides American flags at Louisville’s Catholic Cemeteries for families to leave at gravesites on Memorial Day.
