Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital at 1850 Bluegrass Ave. will begin a major renovation and expansion of the hospital’s emergency department with groundbreaking ceremonies on Nov. 3.
The hospital, part of KentuckyOne Health, has one of the most highly used emergency departments in the city, and is a major provider of emergency health care for the city of Louisville’s South End.
According to a news release from KentuckyOne Health, the changes in the emergency department will increase its clinical area by 115 percent. The renovation will also bring new technology “to the patient’s bedside and improve overall workflow of the department,” the release said. It added that the changes are intended to help decrease the time patients wait to be seen by the hospital’s medical staff.
Those attending the Nov. 3 ground breaking will include Ruth W. Brinkley, president and CEO of KentuckyOne Health; Lt. Governor Jerry Abramson, a long-time mayor of Louisville Metro, and the city’s current mayor, Greg Fischer. Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz will also join them at the ceremony.
The news release added that Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital is the only “acute care hospital serving the people of South Louisville, an area with a population upwards of 176,000.”
The current emergency department was built for half the current patient volume handled there each year. The expansion and renovation project is being funded by a campaign launched several years ago by the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation specifically to pay for the emergency department changes.
