The candidates for ordination, from left, Fathers Minh Vu, Kien Nguyen, David Farrell, Brandon DeToma and Robert Barnell are called forward during the rite of ordination. Father Michael Wimsatt, the director of the Vocation Office, presented the ordinands to Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz and attested to their worthiness. The archbishop told the ordinands — and the standing-room only crowd that gathered to witness the rite — that a vocation to the priesthood is “a great gift.” He urged the newly ordained priests to “be men of adventure,” holy, tough, joyful, studious and gentle.
The five newly-ordained priests, from left, Fathers Minh Vu, Brandon DeToma, David Farrell, Kien Nguyen and Robert Barnell blessed Archbishop Kurtz on the steps of the Cathedral of the Assumption following their ordination May 26.
Father Robert Barnell promised obedience and respect to the archbishop and his successors. Father Barnell will serve as an associate pastor of St. Bartholomew Church.
Archbishop Kurtz laid his hands on Father Brandon DeToma during the ordination rite May 26. The laying on of hands is an ancient gesture signifying the conferral of the Holy Spirit. Father DeToma has been assigned to serve as an associate pastor of St. Bernadette Church.
Archabbot Kurt Stasiak, archabbot of Saint Meinrad Archabbey in St. Meinrad, Ind., right, assisted in vesting Father David Farrell. The newly-ordained are vested with stole, now worn over both shoulders, and with the chasuble, the outer garment worn at the celebration of Mass. Father Farrell will serve as an associate pastor of St. Augustine Church in Lebanon, Ky., and Holy Name of Mary Church in Calvary, Ky.
Archbishop Kurtz presented the paten and chalice to Father Kien Nguyen during the rite of ordination. Father Nguyen, who is from the Diocese of Vinh, Vietnam, will serve as an associate pastor of Holy Trinity and Holy Name churches.
Father Minh Vu shared the kiss of peace with members of the presbyterate. Father Vu, who is originally from the Diocese of Vinh, Vietnam, will serve as an associate pastor of the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown, Ky.
