Father Emil Schuwey dies

Schuwey,-Emil-wMissionary of the Precious Blood Father Emil Schuwey died on Oct. 20 at the St. Charles Center Infirmary in Celina, Ohio. He was 93 and had been a religious for 79 years, having entered the Society of the Precious Blood, Cincinnati Province, in high school.

Father Schuwey was a native of Im Fang, Switzerland, and emigrated to Louisville with his family in 1927. He was ordained in 1949 and served in Kentucky, Ohio, Chile and Switzerland. He served in the Archdiocese of Louisville beginning in 1991 and administered the archdiocesan mission appeal. He also assisted at about 30 parishes during his decade in Louisville, including at Holy Trinity and St. Albert the Great churches.

During his ministry, he spent about 12 years in Chile, served two terms as treasurer of the Society’s general council in Rome, served as a pastor in Ohio and Kentucky and ministered to Spanish-speaking people in Switzerland. He spoke English, Swiss German, German, Spanish and Italian. He retired in 2003 to St. Charles Center, where he continued to assist with Mass at area parishes.

He is survived by four sisters, Lucy Lichsteiner, Sabina Clan and Frieda Schuwey of Louisville and Mary Hamer of Beavercreek, Ohio, and a host of nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. at St. Charles Center. Burial will follow in the community’s cemetery. There will be calling hours on Oct. 22 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.
