Dominican Sister of Peace Joann Mascari, 89, dies

Dominican Sister of Peace Joann Mascari, a native of Memphis, Tenn., died on Oct. 2 at Sansbury Care Center in St. Catharine, Ky. She was 89 and had been a Dominican for 69 years.

Sister Mascari ministered as a teacher in Illinois, Nebraska and Arkansas; in pastoral care in Tennessee and Illinois; as a chaplain in Tennessee; and as a pastoral associate in Mississippi and Kentucky.

In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she served as teacher and principal at the old St. Louis Bertrand School and as pastoral associate at St. Denis Church.

Sister Mascari also served her community, the former Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine, as area assistant in the Chicago area and in the office of the New Dominican Life program.

Sister Mascari is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 10 in the chapel. Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse Cemetery.
