Dominican Father James Murray died Dec. 17 in Columbus, Ohio, after a brief bout with pneumonia. He was 93 and in his 65th year as a priest.

Father Murray, a native of Lowell, Mass., professed vows as a Dominican in 1944 and was ordained a priest in 1950.

He served in Rhode Island, New York, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, Father Murray served as pastor of St. Rose Priory Church in Springfield, Ky., from 1986 to 1990 and served briefly at St. Louis Bertrand Church.

He returned to St. Rose in 2000 and for the last 14 years, he served people in the parish, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse in St. Catharine, Ky., and at the Bardstown Detention Center. He retired to a nursing home in Columbus six months ago.

A wake will take place at St. Rose on Dec. 22 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Rose on Dec. 23 at 11 a.m. followed by burial in St. Rose Cemetery.

A bereavement meal will follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Bardstown Road in Springfield.
