Deacon James Sturgeon dies at 84

Deacon James Clifford (Lefty) Sturgeon Sr. died after a brief illness February 18. He was 84 and had served as a deacon for three decades.

He served as a deacon for the St. Pius X and St. Raphael churches and was on Mass of the Air for 14 years. And he was involved in the Cursillo movement from 1982 to 2011.

Deacon Sturgeon was also an Independent Life, Auto & Casualty Insurance Agent and owner of Jim Sturgeon Insurance Agency, Inc. He served as a coach at St. Barnabas Church during the late 1960s and 1970s.

He is survived by his wife of more than 65 years, Alma Kuhn Sturgeon; his children Debbie Sharp (Teddy), Janine Chancellor (Debbie Condreva), Patti Vance (Jeff) and James Jr. (Sharon), Kerry (Amanda) and Mark Sturgeon; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and siblings John, Estelle and Barbara Ann.

Visitation will be Feb. 22 at Ratterman’s Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Feb. 23 at St. John Paul II Church’s campus at 3521 Goldsmith Lane from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. John Paul II with burial following in Calvary Cemetery.
