Deacon Jackson, retired St. Vincent de Paul cook, dies

Deacon Jarvis Jackson, a retired deacon of the Archdiocese of Louisville, died on March 13 in Louisville. He was 73.

Deacon Jackson was ordained a deacon in 1999 and was assigned to St. Martin of Tours Church. He retired in 2012.

He also worked as the cook for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s (SVDP) Open Hand Kitchen for nearly 22 years. He retired from the agency in 2008.

“He always had a smile on his face, and he always told the volunteers to be cordial to the people we were serving,” said Donna Young, SVDP director of conference affairs and volunteer services. “He always took the time to talk to our guests eating in the Open Hand Kitchen. He was just a great man.”

Deacon Jackson was also a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, active in the Coalition of the Homeless and served in the United States Marine Corps.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on April 2 at St. Martin of Tours, 639 S. Shelby St.

He was buried at St. Louis Cemetery on March 21.
