Our Lady of Kibeho crowning planned for Dec. 1

The Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministries will hold a celebration honoring Our Lady of Kibeho, Rwanda, on Dec. 1. Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz will preside at the celebration at St. Thomas More Church, 6105 S. Third St., at 2 p.m.

The event, which will feature a crowning of a statue of Our Lady of Kibeho, will commemorate the first apparition of the Blessed Mother to adolescents in southwestern Kibeho, Rwanda, in the 1980s, according to a news release from the multicultural ministries office.

Mary gave the children various messages during her apparitions, including a vision of Rwanda descending into violence and hatred, the news release said.

This vision was seen as a foretelling of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, the release said. The Catholic Church recognized the visions of three children in 2001 as authentic.
