Community ministry will honor two Catholic groups at banquet

Shively Area Ministries plans to honor two Catholic organizations during its annual banquet on Sept. 27 at Incarnation Church, 2229 Lower Hunters Trace.

Catholic Charities of Louisville and Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital will be recognized for the support they’ve provided to Shively Area Ministries which, in turn, helps families struggling to buy food and pay bills.

“Faithful partners in ministry, such as these two religious organizations, allow us to be faithful to our mission to respond to persons in poverty and in crisis in the spirit of Christ,” said Ursuline Sister Jeane Anne Zappa, who works at the charity.

“For over 15 years, we have been receiving grants from Sts. Mary and Elizabeth for medication, meals on wheels and counseling for our clients,” she said. “For over 10 years, we have been receiving support from Catholic Charities through the (Catholic) Campaign for Human Development grants. These grants have helped us assist clients with food, rent and utilities assistance.”

The charity’s fundraising banquet begins at 6 p.m. and will include a concert by The Monarchs from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Chances also will be sold for a vacation to Orlando, Fla. Admission is $25. A portion of the cost, $15, is a tax deductible donation. Tickets must be purchased in advance no later than Sept. 18 by calling 447-4330, ext. 23.

Shively Area Ministries is supported by a group of Shively churches, including the Catholic parishes of St. Lawrence, Incarnation and Mary Queen of Peace.
