Catholics urged to contact lawmakers

GeneralAssemblyDome2017-fEdChoice Kentucky, a non-profit organization that aims to give families more choices in education through a scholarship tax credit program, invites individuals to encourage their legislators to support two measures in the Kentucky General Assembly — House Bill 162 and Senate Bill 102.

The two proposals would provide tax credits for Kentucky taxpayers who donate to a non-public school scholarship organization, such as the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF), said Andrew Vandiver, associate director of the Catholic Conference of Kentucky (CCK). The CCK represents the concerns of Kentucky’s four bishops on matters of public policy.

Individuals may call or email their state representative and senator. To find your local representative or senator visit lrc.ky.gov and click on “Who’s My Legislator.” To find the email of your legislator, visit https://www.lrc.ky.gov/whoswho/email.htm.

If you already know your legislator, call the legislative hotline at 800-372-7181 and leave a message with your representative or senator.

EdChoice encourages people to tell them to co-sponsor HB 162 and SB 102 “because a scholarship tax credit program provides educational opportunities for all Kentucky students,” a news release from the organization said.

Under the scholarship tax credit program, individuals and businesses who donate to scholarship granting organizations receive a non-refundable tax credit. The scholarship granting organizations  then award “needs-based scholarships to students who wish to attend the non-public school that is the best fit for them,” the release said.

The CCK also encourages parents, educators, students and elected officials to join them in Frankfort, Ky., Jan. 27 for the Kentucky School Choice Week Rally.

The rally will convene on the steps of the capitol at 10 a.m.

Attendees are also encouraged to take a tour of the capitol, visit legislative offices and learn about how to get involved.
