Catholic Charities seeks volunteers to assist refugees

Catholic Charities’ Migration and Refugee Services program will hold a two-hour orientation and volunteer training program at its main office, 2911 S. Fourth St., from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 30.

The training session is intended to help people become mentors or ambassadors to refugee clients as they are welcomed into our community. According to Chris Clements, community resource developer for Catholic Charities, the training effort is part of the Parishes Organized to Welcome Refugees program. Additional mentors are needed as new refugees arrive in the city, he said.

Volunteers are asked to give a four- to six-month commitment to mentoring a refugee or family. They will help the refugees enhance their English as a second language skills and act as a friend to the newcomers. The mentor will also introduce the refugees to services and resources available throughout the community.

For information or to register, call Clements or Althe Faulve at 636-9263 or Rita Eichert at 637-9786.
