Benedictine Brother Blaise Heuke, a beekeeper, dies

Benedictine Brother Blaise (Joseph) Heuke died on June 21 after 61 years of Benedictine life.

Brother Heuke, who attended Holy Name and Flaget High schools in Louisville, entered St. Meinrad Archabbey in 1957 and made final vows in 1962.

In 1969, he moved to the Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside, Cal., where he served as plumber for the monastery and as the resident beekeeper for more than 45 years. He tended as many as 100 hives and provided honey both for the monastery and its gift shop.

He is survived by his brothers Charles, Thomas, David and Robert; his sisters Rosemary O’Bryan, Dorothy Craven and Joan McGee; and his nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. July 6, at Holy Name Church, 2914 S. Third St.
