Dominican Father Anthony Breen, a missionary, dies at 90

Dominican Father Joseph Anthony Breen

Dominican Father Joseph Anthony Breen died the afternoon of May 20 at the Little Sisters of the Poor St. Joseph’s Home. He was 90.

Father Breen made his solemn profession of vows in 1960 and was ordained to the priesthood at St. Dominic’s Church in Washington, D.C., on June 13, 1963. During his ministry, he served as a missionary, pastor and parochial vicar. 

He spent 35 years as a missionary in Pakistan, returning to the United States in 2000. He served as a pastor in Ohio and as a chaplain for a religious order. In 2014, he moved to Louisville and served at St. Louis Bertrand Church. He lived at St. Joseph’s Home for the last two years.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews and by his Dominican community.

Visitation will be held on May 25 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Louis Bertrand, 1104 South 6th Street. The Office for the Dead will be prayed at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., and the next morning at 7:35 a.m. 

The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on May 26 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Louis Bertrand, with burial immediately following at St. Rose Cemetery in Springfield, Ky. The Funeral Mass and Office of the Dead will be livestreamed at stlb.org/live-streaming.
