Students raise funds in honor of classmate who had cancer

Alaina Kenney

Students at John Paul II Academy participated in a dress-down day Sept. 28 to raise funds in honor of Alaina Kenney, a seventh-grader who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a form of cancer, in 2019.

The students raised $352, which will be donated to Norton Children’s Cancer Institute where Alaina received years of treatment and care, according to an announcement from the school.

During the month of September — observed as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month  — students at John Paul II learned about ways they can support individuals diagnosed with cancer including Alaina.

Alaina’s four-year treatment included 200 nights in the hospital. She completed her treatment in August, is considered cancer-free and has returned to school.
