The Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry (OMM) will host the 31st annual Citywide Kwanzaa Celebration at 11 a.m. Dec. 29 at the Catholic Enrichment Center, 3146 W. Broadway.
Kwanzaa, which means “first fruits” of the harvest in Swahili, is a seven-day harvest festival celebrated Dec. 26 to Jan. 1. It is a celebration of family, community and culture and is not a religious holiday.
Kwanzaa was founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor of African Studies at California State University-Long Beach. At the heart of each Kwanzaa celebration are the Nguzo Saba, the Seven Principles, one for each day of the observance. The principal and practice of the day for this year’s celebration is “Ujamaa,” which means cooperative economics. The principal encourages building and maintaining stores, shops and other businesses and profiting from them as a community.
The celebration is a family event filled with music, prayer, African drumming and more.
