Sister Mary James Corey, SCN, dies at age 84

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Mary James Corey, 84, died at Nazareth Home on Aug. 25. She was a professed Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 61 years.

Sister Corey, a native of Chicago, Ill., served as an elementary school teacher from 1956 to 1979 in Ohio, Massachusetts and Kentucky. She later served in secondary education at Presentation Academy.

From 1980 to 1983 she served in health-care ministry at Our Lady of Peace Hospital. She also served her SCN community as supervisor of food services on the motherhouse campus in Nazareth, Ky.

From 1988 to 2014, she volunteered at Candy for Caring, a charitable candy-making project that serves area social service agencies.

She is survived by her sister, Sister of St. Joseph Margaret Jude Corey, and her religious community.

The wake service will be held Aug. 29 at 1:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Nazareth Chapel, Nazareth Home, 2000 Newburg Road. A prayer service will be held that evening at 6:30 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Nazareth, Ky.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Aug. 30, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Vincent. Burial will be in Nazareth Cemetery.
