Students wrap up school year with a variety of service

Students across the Archdiocese of Louisville wrapped up the school year with various service projects and activities.

  • Members of Holy Trinity Church’s high school youth group visited Gilda’s Club last month where they prepared a meal and dessert for the young people served by that organization. Gilda’s Club serves youth and adults who are suffering from cancer or have a relative affected by cancer.
  • Holy Angels Academy juniors and seniors took part in a retreat last month. During the retreat, a group of girls visited the Sisters of Saint Joseph The Worker at their St. William Convent in Walton, Ky. Students toured the grounds, took part in daily prayers and heard a presentation on vocations. The group also visited churches in the area. A group of boys visited the congregation of the Fathers of Mercy in Auburn, Ky., where they took part in Mass and heard talks on vocations and morality. The students also had the opportunity to go to confession and take part in exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.
  • Members of Teens Gathered in Faith (TGIF) at St. Francis Xavier Church in Mount Washington, Ky., took part in a refugee simulation camp program offered by Catholic Charities of Louisville at the church in March. The program, which student Lauren Reuss called “an amazing experience,” is designed to help young people understand the plight of refugees. The program has been adapted into a guide book to be used by schools and parishes across the country.
  • Assumption High School students delivered toiletry items to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s emergency shelter last month. Students also donated $1,500 to the Catholic Relief Services’ Operation Rice Bowl program.

Assumption’s Advanced Placement environmental science students were awarded a $3,000 grant from the Knollenberg Foundation, an organization whose mission is to introduce, teach and promote organic gardening among young people, according to the foundation’s website.
The grant was awarded to the students for their plan to combat Louisville’s urban heat island effect on the school’s campus. An urban heat island is an area that’s significantly warmer than the rural areas surrounding it. According to louisvilleky.gov, the urban heat island effect is advancing in the city at one of the fastest rates in the country.
