Holy Thursday Service
Holy Trinity School completed its annual Holy Thursday Service at numerous locations throughout Louisville.
The pre-kindergarten students served Sister Visitor Center this year with various personal hygiene and food drives. Kindergarten and first-grade students made Christmas stockings and Easter baskets for children who are homeless and receive resources through the Schuhmann Center. The Hospital Hospitality House received baked goods, cleaning supplies and student-made door decorations from the second-grade class. Third-graders provided the same items for Ronald McDonald House. The fourth-grade worked with the Little Way Pregnancy Resource Center to collect baby hygiene items.
The fifth- to eighth-grade students visited with and assisted guests at various missions including the Masonic Home, Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services, the Kids’ Café and Harbor House.
The service acts were a way for the school community to “recall how Jesus served others and washed the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper,” a news release from the school said.
Letters of intent
Six Sacred Heart Academy seniors signed national letters of intent to play college athletics. They are:
Caroline Fowler, Rhodes College (field hockey); Nikki Kauffmann, Bellarmine University (swimming); Kianna Dieudonne, Rollins College (volleyball); Kelsey Gentile, Bellarmine (volleyball); Kaitlyn (KJ) Holden, DePauw University (softball); and Ellen Stephens, Centre College (softball).
Dr. Suess Day
Four students at Assumption High School organized a volunteer project at Home of the Innocents April 19. The Assumption students — Claire Hook, Chrissy Kaninberg, Edo Ighadaro and Emme Schoen — hosted a “Dr. Suess Day” where they dressed up as “Things #1, #2, #3 and #4” and read various Dr. Suess books to the kids.
Journalism award
Four staffers of Trinity High School’s student newspaper, The ECHO, won six awards in the annual Western Kentucky University Mark of Excellence Journalism Contest.
Editor-in-Chief Jake Smith led the way with three awards: first place in feature writing and sports writing, and second place in sports photography.
Editor Ryan Coleman placed second in news writing. First-year writer Tyler Harris finished second in column/review writing, and sophomore Forde Womack placed third in news/feature photography.
Art competition
- Olivia Vanegas, a student at Assumption High School, earned first place in the drawing division of the 2014 Derby Region Kentucky Art Educators Association All-State Art Competition. She was one of several Assumption students to win awards. Hollie Collins, placed second in the same area.
In the painting category, Collins, Vanegas and Katelyn Zinsmeister won first place with Emma Steer earning third. In mixed media, Collins won first place and Whitney Brown earned third.
The Derby Region first place winners went on to compete at the state level where Hollie Collins took first place in painting in the Kentucky Art Educators Association All-State Art Competition. Olivia Vanegas received first place in drawing and Collins received a third place in mixed media. - Mitchell Smith, a senior at Trinity High School, earned five first-place awards in the 2014 Woman’s Club of St. Matthews Student Arts & Crafts Contest. Smith’s first-place ribbons were in painting, printmaking, drawing, pottery and ceramics and watercolor.
Math league
Several Trinity High School students received awards at the Greater Louisville Math League’s post-season district awards ceremony April 29.
Chris Collins took first place. Will Paris placed second. And, Collins, Jack Feger and Jacob Kalbfleisch earned fourth place.
Trinity’s team received second place overall in the district.
