The annual Candle Floating Ceremony, this year marking the 67th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, will be held at 8 p.m. Aug. 4 at Willow Lake at the corner of
Lexington Road and Grinstead Drive. The ceremony is free and open to the public and is presented by Interfaith Paths to Peace and the Louisville Chapter of the Fellowship of Reconciliation.
The event will include the premier performance of a classical music composition called “Hiroshima Lovers” composed by Collegiate High School student Maya Berkley. A traditional Asian “Lion Dance” will be performed, too.
Other services commemorating the use of the atomic bomb on Japan will include:
- A reading from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 6 from John Hersey’s book, Hiroshima. The readings will be held at Thomas Merton Square at the corner of Muhammad Ali Blvd. and Fourth St.
- A dramatic reading and tolling of the bells at noon on Aug. 9, the anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki, at Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral. Peace advocates will read Thomas Merton’s poem, “Original Child Bomb” in the Memorial Garden at Christ Church, 421 S. Second St.
