From The Record, March 25, 1937:

“Property damage is something else; the nerve-retching experience something else again; the former can eventually be estimated, the latter will never be known except by Him Who knows all things; there will be days and months to come when the recurring nightmare of this terrible flood may still be driving people out of their wits. Seventy-five million dollars is the estimate of property damage made by the City’s financial authorities; but this does not include damage in private homes to furniture, floors, furnaces, clothes, bedclothes and other household effects, which, in thousands upon thousands of homes were completely ruined. On the other hand is a bright note; less that one-fifth of one percent of the homes were structurally damaged; paint, paper, soap and water and elbow grease will fix them up again.”
