Governor’s Scholars

Fifty-four students who attend Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville have been selected for the 2015 Governor’s Scholars Program. Those selected for the summer program and their schools are:

  •  Assumption High School —  Sophie Beavin, Anna Bientz, Meghan Carrico, Sarah Crawford, Claire Feller, Edoghogho Ighodaro, Jessica Nguyen, Kathryn Nilest, Angela Tran and Hannah Wethington.
  • Bethlehem High School — Travis Ray and Morgan Salsman.
  • DeSales High School — Scott Kaufman.
  • Holy Cross High School — Megan Snodgress.
  • Mercy Academy — Ailiyah Alim, Candace Cox, Ashley Cravens, Amanda Greenwell, Jade Hagan, Olivia Hennis, Alison Terrell and Amber Willett.
  • Presentation Academy — Lindsay Reynolds.
  • Sacred Heart Academy — Clare Blim, Emily Easterling, Abigail Estes, Abigail George, Abigail Haering, Mary Ramsey, Mary Virginia Shook, Elizabeth Wahlstedt and Mary Wentzel.
  • St. Xavier High School — Eric Bush, Liam Crooks, Peary Farrar, Oliver Hirn, Jackson Keadle, Nolan Lawson, Paul Loheide, Chase Mattingly, Thomas Ostertag, Daniel Ryan, Zachary Schuhmann, Jackson Smith, Eric Wahlstedt and John Wahlstedt.
  • Trinity High School — Braden Barnett, Jeremy Borden, Elijah Donohue, Evan Grimm, Andrew Letterle, Timothy Raque, Phillip Sandman and Henry Snyder.

Arts scholars

Several students have been selected to participate in the 2015 Governor’s School for the Arts program:

  • St. Xavier High School — Landis Helwig (drama), Jackson Keadle (creative writing), Mark Vogt (new media), Jacob Lichtefeld (dance) and Michael Bailey (drama).
  • Trinity High School — Chidum Okeke (creative writing) and Evan Pride (drama). Ben Kopriva was selected for the Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs.

Internship

Kyle Bilyeu, a Trinity High School senior, is one of 12 students to be accepted into the James Graham Brown Cancer Center Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP).  The eight-week research internship program runs from June 8 to July 31 and students are required to work a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Future leaders

Members of Trinity High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club won top awards in the state tournament and will attend the national conference. Tyler Cissell, Derek Nafziger and Holden Turney won first place in the public service announcement category. Ben Baughman placed second in the business law category.

Prayer contest

Four Holy Angels Academy students were winners in the Try Prayer! It Works! 2015 contest. Jessica Kramer won first place for sixth-grade; Austin Kramer, first place for 10th-grade; John Klapheke, second place for 10th-grade and Caroline Olson, second place for 12th-grade. The contest, sponsored by Holy Cross Family Ministries, focused on the theme “Being About the Work of my Father.” The contest was held in 14 countries and thousands of students entered, according to a news release from the school.

Letters of Intent

Six Trinity High School seniors recently signed national letters of intent to participate in college athletics.
They are: Eric Goranflo (soccer), Spalding University; Thomas Shellenberg and Tristan Thielmeier (soccer), Transylvania University; Cooper Warner (baseball), Centre College; Michael Stafford (basketball), Transylvania University; Vince Turner (cross country), Murray State University.

Heritage Girls

The American Heritage Girls Troop 1031 will hold an open house on May 8 at 6:30 p.m. in St. Martin of Tours Church’s parish hall, 639 S. Shelby St. For more information, call troop leader Carrie McGraw at 417-8755.

School dance

Assumption High School students will host a dance for middle school students on May 23 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at St. Pius X Community Center, 3525 Goldsmith Lane. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 and include concessions. The proceeds will benefit St. Joseph Children’s Home and St. Pius X Church.

Free movie night

Mercy Academy, 5801 Fegenbush Lane, will offer a free movie night on May 8 at 8 p.m. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I” will be shown. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and sandwiches will be provided to the first 200 guests. Popcorn and soft drinks will be available for purchase. Chaperones must accompany young people.

Storybook ballet

Sacred Heart School for the Arts dance department will present a ballet performance of “Cinderella” on May 8 and May 9 at 7 p.m. and then again on May 10 at 2 p.m. All performances will be at the Ursuline Arts Center, Bldg. 5, 3114 Lexington Road. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for senior citizens and may be purchased online at www.showtix4u.com or at the door.
