Coloring contest
The Ancient Order of Hibernians is once again sponsoring its annual St. Patrick Coloring Contest for kindergarten to fourth-grade students.
Entry forms will be sent to all area Catholic elementary schools. Forms also will be available at www.LouisvilleIrish.com and at all branches of King Southern Bank.
Three winners will be chosen from each grade in addition to one grand prize winner. The top winner from each grade and the grand-prize winner will be honored at a Mass in honor of St. Patrick at St. Louis Bertrand Church on March 15 at noon.
Following Mass, all winners and their families are able to ride in a special unit in the St. Patrick’s Parade on Baxter Ave. and Bardstown Road.
Each winner will receive his or her framed entry and a coloring contest t-shirt. The grand prize winner also receives a $100 cashier’s check.
DeSales football
The DeSales High School football team was honored at the Kentucky State Capitol on Jan. 17.
At the invitation of Representative Denny Butler, a 1988 DeSales graduate, and Senator Perry Clark, a 1975 graduate, the team and coaches received a formal recognition on both the House and Senate floors.
The Colts beat Newport Central Catholic School Dec. 7 in Bowling Green, Ky., to win the 2013 Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl 2A Championship.
Book challenge
Archdiocese of Louisville schools will take part in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge, a program organized by the Louisville Free Public Library.
The program encourages families and caregivers to read 1,000 books with children before their first day of kindergarten, a news release from the school said.
Parents, caregivers and preschool teachers are encouraged to track the books read to the children. Preschool classes can log books read on a poster, and parents can pick up a log book at the library.
When parents confirm a child has read 1,000 books, the child will receive a book and parents who are enrolled will be eligible to win a $500 Barnes & Noble gift card. For more information visit www.lfpl.org/1000books.
Eagle Scouts
Shawn Kaelin and Daniel Ryan, both Trinity High School students, have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.
Kaelin, a member of Troop 327 at St. Albert the Great Church, constructed a 190-foot fence around the soccer fields at Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve in Goshen, Ky., for his Eagle Scout Leadership Project.
Ryan, a member of Troop 8 at Hurstbourne Christian Church, built toy chests for the emergency day care unit at Wayside Christian Mission for his leadership project. Additionally, Ryan coordinated several toy drives to fill the chests with educational toys.
All-American
Wes Parker, a student at St. Xavier High School, has been named to the USA High School All-American Rugby Team for the 2014 season. Parker is the first Kentucky student-athlete to be selected as a High School All-American in rugby. He represented not only Kentucky but the U.S. in the USA Sevens Rugby Tournament Jan. 22 to 24 held in Las Vegas.
Play
St. Nicholas Academy will present “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” Feb. 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. at the Iroquois Amphitheater, near the intersection of New Cut Road and Kenwood Drive. The play will be performed by students in grades three to eight. Tickets are $5 at the door.
