Speech and debate

Assumption High School’s speech and debate team placed first overall in the Kentucky Catholic Forensic League’s national qualifying tournament March 8. Eleven students qualified to compete in the national competition.

The public forum debate team of juniors Brigit Gillespie and Molly Livingston, was the tournament champion in public forum and will compete at nationals. Two other public forum debate teams also qualified, including junior Grace Gardone and sophomore Kailyn Deitz and freshmen Kennedy Nodler and Correna Tate.

For the first time, Assumption will have a Lincoln/Douglas debate competitor at nationals — Sarah Daus, who placed second at the tournament. The interpretation team of senior Taylor Duvall and junior Kait Petter qualified with a third place finish.

Senior Raegan Davis will compete in extemporaneous speaking and sophomore ­Kourtney Dwyer qualified in oral interpretation of literature.

Service project

Kaylee Crawley and Alyssa Drury, seniors at Holy Cross High School, raised $300 to host a St. Patrick’s Day party at Harbor House, a development center for adults with disabilities, as part of their senior service project. The students are graduates of Notre Dame Academy and parishioners of St. Lawrence Church.

Art contest

Emma Talbott, a student at Sacred Heart Model School, was named the Jefferson County winner in the 2014 Jim Claypool Conservation Art Contest. The contest focused on soil conservation.

Eagle Scout

John Campbell, a senior at Trinity High School, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He is a member of Troop 346 at St. Gabriel Church. For his Eagle Scout Leadership Project, Campbell constructed steps and reinforced a target at the disc golf course at Charlie Vettiner Park.

Choir accolade

The Assumption High School advanced choir received a distinguished rating at the Kentucky Music Educators Association district performance assessment last month. This rating qualifies the advanced choir for the state competition in May.
