National symposium

Analisa Conway, a freshman at Assumption High School, will advance to the national Junior Science and Humanities Symposium for her project titled “Exploring Vinyl Flooring Cytotoxicity.”
Her project used regenerative flatworms to determine if compounds released by flexible vinyl flooring “can impact their regenerative or developmental processes and potentially create symptoms which can be correlated to the Autism spectrum in humans,” a news release from the school said. Conway’s presentation was one of five selected to represent Kentucky.

KUNA honors

  • Mercy Academy was honored with a “delegation of excellence” award at a March 15-17 Kentucky United Nations Assembly (KUNA) conference. Junior Julie Hummel also won a “best delegate” award.
  • Several Trinity High School students were honored at a March 8-10 KUNA conference. Senior Nathan Larch earned an “outstanding speaker” award for the third consecutive time. Senior Derek Nafziger was named an “outstanding delegate.” Trinity received a “delegation of excellence” award. A proposal by juniors Daniel Maradits and Henry Snyder was approved.

National guard

Christopher Ricker, a senior at Trinity High School, has been selected for the 2015 Kentucky National Guard All-Resilient Team. He will be honored at a banquet in Louisville on April 23 as part of the Kentucky Athletic Directors’ conference.

Art awards

St. Xavier High School senior Victor Burklow and junior Jacob Crider received national Scholastic Art Awards.
Burklow earned a gold medal in painting and Crider earned a silver medal in ceramics and glass. The awards ceremony will be held at Carnegie Hall in June.

Best band

The Trinity High School Drum Line won its fourth consecutive and fifth overall trophy as “best band” in the annual St. Patrick’s Parade which was held March 14 on Baxter Avenue.
Merit scholar

Michael Turner, a St. Xavier High School senior, has been selected to receive the National Merit James E. Casey Scholarship sponsored by the UPS Foundation.
