Food donation

Students at Assumption High School collected 8,900 canned goods — more than 9,000 pounds of food — for the Dare to Care Food Bank.
As part of the school’s eighth annual food drive, the students constructed temporary sculptures with the cans before donating the food items to Dare to Care.
Since 2006, Assumption students have donated more than 51,000 canned goods to help relieve hunger in the Louisville area, a news release from the school said.

Scholar program

Kevin Reilly and Alex Young, both seniors at St. Xavier High School, have been selected as 2014 Churchill Downs Governor’s Scholars.
To be selected, students had to participate in the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program last summer and “they had to overcome personal challenges or adversity to become high achievers in both their personal lives and the classroom,” a news release from the school said.
Reilly and Young were among 29 high school seniors to receive this honor at a luncheon Nov. 13.

All-State choir

Alexander “Xander” Eisert, a junior at St. Xavier High School, was selected for the 2015 Kentucky All-State Male Choir.
Eisert competed in a group of more than 600 singers to earn a spot in the Bass II section of the choir. He will join other All-State singers from the Commonwealth for a choral concert in February as part of the annual Kentucky Music Educators’ Association Conference.

State champs

The Assumption High School field hockey team won the KHSAA state field hockey championship for the second year in a row.
Elizabeth Allgeier, Emma Spinetto, Kennedy Frantz and Erika Cooper scored four goals with Bailey Higgins and Allgeier recording assists to make the final score 4-0.
This is the school’s 11th state title in field hockey.

Open house

Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students are invited to visit Assumption High School for an open house Dec. 4 at 6:30 p.m. The open house is an opportunity for families to tour the campus, meet current students and speak with teachers about curriculum and academic programs.
Coaches, club and organization leaders, counselors, and business office personnel will also be present. Student or self-guided tours are available.

Movie night

Mercy Academy will host a Christmas-themed movie night at the school, 5801 Fegenbush Lane, Dec. 5. Due to licensing issues, the title of the movie cannot be printed.
The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for pictures with Santa and the movie begins at 7 p.m. Admission is free and concessions will be available for purchase.
