Xaverian Brother Peter Donohue, a teacher at St. X and Flaget, dies

XaverianBrotherslogo-11-5-15-wXaverian Brother Peter Donohue, formerly Brother Owen, died July 26 at the Brentwood Rehab Center in Danvers, Mass., following a lengthy illness. He was 89 and had been a member of the Congregation of the Brothers of St. Francis Xavier for 72 years.

Brother Donohue, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., served as an educator and administrator in New York, Massachuestts, Kentucky, South Carolina and Maryland. His teaching ministry began at Flaget High School in 1949. The following year he was assigned to St. Xavier High School, where he taught for five years. He returned to Flaget in 1960.

He served in prison ministry in California and Maryland. And he served formerly as president of the American Correctional Chaplains Association. He had been a resident of Xaverian House in Danvers since 2009.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews and his religious brothers.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 29 in the Chapel of Saint John’s Preparatory School in Danvers. Burial was in the Xaverian Brothers Cemetery in Danvers. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Xaverian Brothers Retirement Fund, 4409 Frederick Ave., Baltimore, Md., 21229.
