Vespers service will mark Year of Consecrated Life

ConsecratedLife-logo-fIn celebration of the Year of Consecrated Life, a special vespers service will be held at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 433 S. Fifth St., on Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz will preside and members of religious communities serving in the Archdiocese of Louisville are expected to participate.

The public is invited to join them in prayer and “learn more about these heroic examples of Gospel living,” an announcement about the service said. A reception and an opportunity to meet religious will follow the service.

Members of more than 26 religious orders serve in the Archdiocese of Louisville and the church is celebrating their lives of service during the Year of Consecrated Life. The special observance, which is actually more than a year long, began in Advent last year and runs through Feb. 2, 2016. The theme of the observance is “Wake Up the World!”

Pope Francis called for the special year, asking the faithful to give thanks for the gifts members of religious orders have given the church and the world. He also has asked the laity to join those living consecrated life in prayer and to find practical ways to support them and their ministries.

“Let them know the affection and the warmth which the entire Christian people feels for them,” he wrote in a letter announcing the special year.

Local religious communities are observing the Year of Consecrated Life — and taking its theme seriously — by working together to build a Habitat for Humanity House. The “Wake Up the World” Habitat house is nearly complete and it will be dedicated on Sept. 12.
