St. Xavier High School students win film awards

St.X logoMark Vogt, a 2016 graduate of St. Xavier High School, won a Silver Telly Award for the trailer of his film “East Point” about how a group of teenagers survive a post-apocalyptic world.

The Telly Awards, “is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest video, film production and web commercials,” according to a press release from The Telly Awards.

The Silver Telly is the highest award given by the organization and less than 10 percent of entries are awarded one, said the release.

Vogt is also among eight St. Xavier students who will receive student production awards from the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Art and Sciences (NATAS) during the regional Emmy Awards Gala which will be held in Lawrenceberg, Ind., Aug. 6.

The winning films are: “Maverick,” which won in the short form, non-fiction category; “Echo Trail” and “East Point,” which won in the long form, fiction category; “This is John,” which won in the public service announcement category; and “Cups,” which won in the video essay category.

The students also won awards for the use of audio and sound, directing and photography.

The winning film students are: Mark Vogt, Kyle Fitzgerald, Josh Hensel and Michael Bailey, all 2016 graduates; seniors, Tate Becherer and Chace Recktenwald; and sophomores, Ethan Cagata and Jordan Morrow.

These entries will go on to compete in the NATAS National Student Production Awards of Excellence competition which will be held Oct. 4 at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.
