More than 100 clients of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) are taking part in Mayor Greg Fischer’s annual volunteer program “Give A Day” week of service which started April 18 and ends April 26.
“To show their gratitude for the many ways in which our community has helped them, the clients have chosen a variety of activities in which to give back and join in the spirit of compassion,” said a press release from the society.
Elementary and middle school children will help by packing lunches for a charitable organization. Men and women from SVDP’s homeless shelters, recovery center and supportive housing programs will pick up trash in local parks and businesses, according to a statement from the nonprofit.
On April 18, a group of men from SVDP’s homeless shelter spent the day at Masonic Homes of Kentucky spreading mulch, washing windows and painting benches.
Women in the SVDP’s St. Jude Women’s Recovery Program have written “affirmations” which they delivered to women in the Family Scholar House program April 22.
On April 25 a group of men from the SVDP Dorm Recovery Program will take part in a forest restoration project at Louisville Nature Center, Beargrass Creek State Park Nature Preserve.
