Spalding University begins construction on Century Park

logo_spaldingSpalding University has begun work to remove 2.2 acres of concrete and asphalt parking lots at 960 South Second St. near Kentucky St.

Following this initial phase, construction will begin on Century Park — a green space that will offer students a space for intramural sports and recreation, according to a statement from the school.

Completion of the park is projected for early fall. The university hopes the park will also serve to beautify the south of Broadway neighborhood and diminish the urban heat effect in that area.

“Through partnerships with community stewards like LG&E, Spalding is able to expand its campus and opportunities for students while improving the quality of life of those in the neighborhood,” said Dr. Tori Murden McClure, Spalding’s president in the statement.

The project is a partnership with Louisville Gas and Electric Company. It’s a part of Spalding’s “ongoing expansion and greening efforts” which also include Mother Catherine Spalding Square on Breckinridge Street between Third and Fourth streets.

The school has also acquired a former industrial property on Ninth Street, which will be the home of athletic fields. Spalding recently announced the purchase of the former Kroger property at 924 South Second St.
