Sister Mary Lois Speaks, a spiritual director, dies at 72

OSU-MSJ-Logo-2016Ursuline Sister of Mount St. Joseph Sister Mary Lois Speaks died May 6. She was 72 and in her 54th year as an Ursuline Sister.

Sister Speaks, a native of Henderson, Ky., served in a variety of roles in Kentucky and Nebraska. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she served as a teacher at St. Ignatius School in 1966, principal of St. Leonard School from 1976 to 1979 and parish coordinator at St. Columba Church from 1979 to 82.

She was the coordinator of charismatic renewal for the archdiocese from 1982 to 1989. She also served as the director of the Ursuline Associates from 1991 to 1996.

She served briefly in 1997 at the Marion County, Ky., Adjustment Center and then served for 14 years at Marion County High School.

She retired in 2011, but remained in Marion County, offering spiritual direction to those in need until 2017.

She is survived by her sister, Phyllis Speaks of Henderson; three brothers, Don  and William Francis Speaks of Henderson and John Speaks of Owensboro, Ky.; nieces and nephews and members of her religious community.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. May 9, in the Motherhouse Chapel, with a wake service at 6:30 p.m.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. May 10 in the chapel.
