Sister Marie McCarty, SCN, dies at age 91

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Marie McCarty died June 15 at Nazareth Home in Louisville. She was 91 and had been a Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 69 years.

Sister McCarty, a native of Roanoke, Va., served in elementary education in Tennessee, Kentucky, Massachusetts and Ohio as a teacher and principal for 48 years.

In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at St. Lawrence, Most Blessed Sacrament, St. Cecilia and St. Gabriel schools. She also taught at Crossroads Public School in Payneville, Ky., from 1976 to 1984 and served as principal there from 1984 to 1990. She served as a substitute teacher in Meade County, as well.

Sister McCarty volunteered in music ministry at St. Theresa Church in Rhodelia, Ky., from 1990 to 2008. Since 2011, she had served in the apostolate of prayer at Nazareth Home.

She is survived by two sisters, Madeline Theimer of Fincastle, Va., and Joan Gray of Suffolk, Va., and her religious community.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 18 at St. Vincent Church in Nazareth, Ky.
