Sister of Charity of Nazareth Julia Clare Fontaine, 97, dies

Sister of Charity of Nazareth Julia Clare Fontaine, 97, died Feb. 22 at Nazareth Home. She was a professed Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 76 years.

Sister Fontaine, a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., primarily served in education. She taught in the Dioceses of Lexington, Owensboro and Covington and in Maryland. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, she taught at St. Cecilia School.

She served as a college instructor in the biology department of Nazareth College from 1959 to 1967 and later served as a department chair at Spalding University. Sister Fontaine earned a doctoral degree in anatomy from the University of Louisville while also serving as an associate professor there.

For many years, she served as director of community service for the Sisters of Charity.

Sister Fontaine is survived by her nieces, nephews and their families and members of her religious community.

The visitation and wake will be held Feb. 26 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Nazareth Home, 2000 Newburg Road.

A prayer service will be held at St. Vincent Church in Nazareth, Ky., Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Feb. 27 at St. Vincent at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial in Nazareth Cemetery.
