St. Rita Church and School, 8709 Preston Highway, held ceremonies late last week to dedicate a new mosaic tile image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The image is affixed to the North side of St. Rita Church, facing the parking lot.

It was created in memory of 10-year-old Ruby Salinas, who died in a car wreck when she was a fourth-grader at St. Rita School in February of 2012. Ruby was on a family vacation visiting Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace when the wreck occurred.

Yolanda Moore, who works in Hispanic ministry at St. Rita, said Ruby was a star student.

“She had already won 23 awards (and after her death, they numbered 47),” Moore said in an email to The Record. “And the weekend after her death, she was to compete in Lexington as the team captain of a reading book club from St. Rita School (the only girl with 4 boys).”

Ruby also was learning to play piano, danced and was a member of the parish’s Hispanic Choir.
