Loretto Sister Katherine Misbauer, an educator, dies

Sister of Loretto Katherine Misbauer (formerly Sister M. Katrien, then Sister Catherine Siena) died Oct. 1 at the Loretto Motherhouse Infirmary in Nerinx, Ky. She was 78 and in her 62nd year of religious life.

Sister Misbauer, a native of St. Louis, served in Illinois, Missouri, Texas and Kentucky. She spent 25 years ministering as an educator.

In Kentucky, Sister Misbauer served as principal of St. Augustine High School in Lebanon, Ky., from 1963-1970. She taught at Christ the King School in Louisville from 1977 to 1979 and served as principal from 1979 to 1984. From 1984 to 1990, she taught at St. Francis of Assisi School.

Sister Misbauer also served as an archivist at the Loretto Motherhouse from 1998 to 2010, renovating and developing the archive facilities and services. She was the editor of the Sisters of Loretto monthly newsletter and a coordinator of the Loretto Convent in El Paso, Texas.

From 2002 to 2004, Sister Misbauer served as vice president, president and past president of the Archivists of Congregations of Women Religious.

She retired in 2010 to the Motherhouse, where she carried out a ministry of service and prayer until her death.

She is survived by her brothers, Joseph Misbauer of Florissant, Mo., and Michael Misbauer of Overland, Mo.

A wake will be held Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Motherhouse.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Oct. 7 at the Church of the Seven Dolors on the campus of the Motherhouse in Nerinx followed by burial in the Motherhouse cemetery.
