‘Fortnight for Freedom,’ annual observance, planned June 21 to July 4

fortnight-logowRecord Staff Report
The Archdiocese of Louisville and dioceses across the nation will observe the annual Fortnight for Freedom — a campaign to promote religious liberty — June 21 to July 4.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Freedom for Mission.”

A special Fortnight for Freedom Mass will be held June 23 at 5 p.m. at the Little Sisters of the Poor, 15 Audubon Plaza Drive.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, which organizes the observance each year, is encouraging Catholics to take part.

“We encourage you to hold firm, to stand fast and to insist upon what belongs to you by right as Catholics and Americans,” a press release from the conference said. “Our country deserves the best we have to offer, including our resistance to violations of our first freedom.”

According to the release, the annual “Fortnight” is a special time for prayer, education and action. The 14 days include the feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More — martyrs of the church who “remained faithful in the face of religious persecution” — and Independence Day, the release noted.

Catholics are called by Christ, the USCCB website said, to be missionary disciples “by seeking truth, serving others and living our faith in all that we do.”

“Let us take a few moments each day from June 21-July 4 to pray, reflect and take action on religious liberty, both here in this country and abroad,” the website said.
